Millthorpe Saffron began in 2007 when Ross and Ellen Higgins moved to the small village of Millthorpe, NSW just 3 hours from Sydney, purchasing 5 acres of land on the outskirts of town with the dream of setting up our own small farming enterprise. After much research into what could grow in our cool climate, we were excited to discover that the amazing spice Saffron was perfectly suited. This year we have harvested 48,000 Saffron flowers producing around 350 grams of saffron. Our flowers are handpicked and the three stigmas separated and dried before being packaged in airtight containers for sale. We package our Saffron in jars containing 100 mg or 200 mg, we also sell 1 gram satchels upon request both wholesale and retail. Saffron is best used in cooking as a seasoning and colouring agent. It is characterized by its stunning golden-yellow colour, its unique taste, and a sweet hay-like fragrance. Saffron is a much-sought ingredient in many foods worldwide both sweet and savory alike. Our Saffron is very fresh compared to saffron imported into Australia and because of this it has a much stronger flavor. We recommend only 20 to 30 threads be used in a receipt that may call up 1 pinch of Saffron. A small amount will go a long way. Enjoy!
